AI Overviews are stealing your traffic 🚨
By March, AI Overviews showed up in up to 13.14% of searches (over 72% increase since January 2025).
Hello, my friend!
Do you know that your website’s performance might have been impacted by AI-generated search results? 🤖
There’s a high chance it’s happening!
Here’s why.
📊 88.1% of search terms on Google that trigger AI Overviews are informational.
That’s what the latest Semrush study revealed after looking at over 10 million keywords that trigger AI Overviews on desktop in the US.
Why should you care about AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear directly within Google Search results, like this:

Why this matters 👇
These AI summaries show up before regular search results. 😮
People might not even click on websites anymore, they already get what they need from the summary. 🤷
It potentially means less traffic for blogs, online stores, affiliates, and content creators like us. 💔
What’s been happening to Google and AI Overviews lately?
Google has been experimenting with AI Overviews for almost two years.
Nowadays, it looks like Google is playing it safe since AI Overviews mostly show up for fact-based, low-competition searches with low CPC.

This honestly reminds me of when Featured Snippets first started showing up. Feels like this is still just the testing phase. 🙄
So, if your SEO content strategy is built around top funnel keywords, like definitions, comparisons, and FAQs, that's where you'll likely see the most change so far.
In my SEO ebook, I share my proven-to-work methods for creating content that hits the Google front page and how to do SEO in the age of AI.
Here are a few other insights from the Semrush study that stood out to me:
📈 By March, AI Overviews showed up in up to 13.14% of searches (over 72% increase since January 2025).
📝 Keywords that trigger AI Overviews are usually longer and more specific (lots of “what is,” “vs,” and “how to” types).
💸 95% of those keywords either have no ads or super low CPC.
🔍 AI Overviews are added on top of regular SERP features, but not replacing them… yet.
🏥 Industries seeing the biggest impact: science, health, people & society, law, and government.
All this tells me that SEO is probably slowly shifting from obsessing over ranking #1 to simply being present in search results.
And honestly, I think that’s a good thing.
It puts more focus on building a brand people (and Google) trust, not just gaming the system with keywords and backlinks.
I shared more thoughts on how to adapt to this shift in my AI SEO trends post.
